https://lauradudu.com/About I see myself as a Kintsugi-artist. I embrace, mend, and make marks on and with imperfections. Instead of repairing broken pottery with lacquer and gold as in the traditional Japanese artform, I work with scattered memories using animation, 16mm film, video, and participatory art. I encountered Mahayana and Zen Buddhism at a young age. Its influence partly explains why a Buddhism view that involves attentively looking into impermanence of life lies at the heart of my artworks. After years feeling undeserving and broken as a queer child in China, I began my search for healing through artmaking, education, and community organizing. &nbsp; My work appreciates and transforms wounds while remaining the restoration process visible and tangible. Informed by my engagement in feminism and queer activism in China and Japan, my recent projects root within personal memories and expand to community (re)-building. Responding to increasing state censorship, my projects happen in spaces of un-expectancy including nail salons, bars, bookstores, and stand-up comedy clubs.&nbsp; Each project is an invitation of connecting/reconnecting based on reciprocal trust. It sometimes exists as a stand-up comedy, a free nail service in return for companionship, or an invitation to design a T-shirt. Rosevelt Park, Manhattan Chinatown, NYC, NY 2022.04 &nbsp; with University of Pennsylvania Chinese Queer and Feminists Alliance Meyerson Hall, Philadelphia, PA 2022.03 &nbsp; with Jingyi Li Morgan Hall, Philadelphia, PA Rooted in a feminist ethics of care, the Ciba Punch subverts the Chinese traditional ciba-making (food-making) process and reveals the often-hidden domestic labor performed by womxn. By punching, chanting, making together, this collective performance of 20 Chinese feminists reclaims our own definitions of (em)power(ment) from patriarchal definitions of force and gendering. Together, we reimagine a powerful yet non-punitive way of community building and healing. Our 22 performers collectively wrote the words for chanting with the Exquisite Corpse method. Their prompt is an imagined conversation between the writer and a womxn figure whom they want to speak with. Some people wrote towards their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or towards themselves, whereas others engaged with goddesses in mythologies or recently arrested/disappeared feminist activists in China. In the process of this collective dialogue and food-making, at the intersection with diaspora experiences, our vulnerable stories, feelings, and struggles of transnational feminism emerge. We have a set of tables at the center of the setup, meant as the boxing ring and the kitchen. They are covered with clothes written with red food coloring. The central word of our project, 女拳手 (Nyu Quan Shou), literally translated as female boxers, is a wordplay of the words 女权 (Nyu Quan) feminist and 拳手 (Quan Shou) boxer. It is a derogatory term often used to shame and stigmatize Chinese feminists, a word that we are now reclaiming as our own. Its multiple layers of meaning come together inside the boxing ring/kitchen, where we punch with cooking tools or our bare hands on the rice dough. We read our poems, speak our words, while inviting other Nyu Quan Shou and the audience to chant with us. Another group of performers, Spiritual Figures, who wear red and white costumes, are a channel for the spirits of feminists and repressed, erased female voices from the past and the future. They engage with Nyu Quan Shou and each other through the exchange of utterances, sounds, breaths, and music. In the boxing ring/kitchen placed in the middle of the park in New York City, Chinese feminists come together to mingle while doing the domestic labor and taking turns to rest, just like what our mothers, aunts, grand-aunts, and grandmothers do. The sound of their hands pounding the rice dough, giggles from gossip that they share, chanting of the poems speak to one another to form a contrapunto. The work captures an encounter in time and space of all the emotions, lived experiences, and the humanity of the Nyu Quan Shou. People make and eat them on occasions like family reunions. Its round shape and sweetness often symbolize “回家，團圓，連結coming together, reuniting, and connecting”. In Rock n’ Roll YuanXiao performance, 18 participants are tasked with a 10ft x 7ft blanket holding over 100 YaunXiao balls and sticky-rice powder. Participants collectively balance the blanket to roll the YuanXiao and have them evenly covered with sticky-rice powder. Through this workshop, we investigate our relationship between labor, food making, and community-(re)building in the era when fragmentation and isolation dominate our feelings of social life. The narrative unfolds from a personal lens. It revisits their very early memory when their grandmother told them that their parents planned to abort them because of their gender and they was the one to blame about their mother’s two forced abortions. The film gives access to the audience of their journey of reconciliation and exploration of gender identity. It consists of both a nail chip and a phone app that work as a duo protection. The nail chip, hidden by nail gel and polish, contains user’s location information and registration code to access the app. The app, which is camouflaged as a regular nail appointment app, would be activated in the presence of a nail chip and become a hidden net and map for users to see nearby feminists and receive future gathering notification. It refers to a spectrum of feeling, love, and emotion and contains meanings for connection, entanglement, and empathy.&nbsp;However, it could also be used to describe a situation, an objectivity, but with a sense of urgency. In China, COVID-19, the pandemic, is composed in word as 疫情 (Yi Qing). In the installation,&nbsp; the character "Qing" is further dismantled and separated into hand-drawn Chinese totems&nbsp; on individual acrylic panel. They are hanged vertically in the middle of the installation. The virus-like balloons around it further distort while mirror the environment with their reflectional surfaces. As the viewers join the installation, all these elements altogether create a parallel parody of the experience we had/have/will have in the time of the pandemic. With a looped video of hundreds of received submissions flying around in the background, we mapped 6 animated windows as the core elements. Once an audience approaches the window, the motion sensor will detect their movement and trigger the animation to start. The window will appear open and show a video behind. Each video is taken from the view through the participant's window. These videos intentionally seize the audience’s attention and invite them to pursue&nbsp; the stories behind.
